PRISM-D
Professional Regulation of International Social Media for Dermatologists

What is PRISM-D?
A dermatologist’s social media post can cross the world in seconds, but the professional rules governing it stop at national borders.
Patients routinely encounter dermatology information created in other countries and under unfamiliar professional standards. At the same time, dermatologists communicating online may face different, or even conflicting expectations relating to patient confidentiality, clinical imagery, testimonials, advertising, product promotion and professional boundaries.
PRISM-D is an international initiative bringing dermatologists together to develop practical consensus principles for responsible professional social media use.
Why PRISM-D is Needed
PRISM-D stands for Professional Regulation of International Social Media for Dermatologists.
It is an independent international consensus initiative, not a regulatory authority. Its purpose is to bring together dermatologists with relevant experience and expertise to identify areas of agreement and develop practical, dermatology-specific principles for professional social media conduct.
PRISM-D aims to:
-
protect patients and strengthen public trust;
-
support accurate, evidence-based online communication;
-
clarify responsible use of clinical images and patient stories;
-
address professional boundaries, privacy and online safety;
-
consider advertising, commercial relationships and conflicts of interest;
-
support responsible education and public health advocacy;
-
produce principles that are relevant across different healthcare and regulatory settings.
The project does not seek to replace national law or professional regulation. Instead, it aims to identify a shared international foundation that can complement existing requirements and inform future guidance.
